About the publication
A new dawn for
the Fourth Estate.
Light without allegiance.

Mahliqa Asmat, Editor
The Fourth Dawn is an independent magazine of essays, opinion and criticism, founded and edited by Mahliqa Asmat, a Glasgow-based writer trained in journalism, media and literature, with contributions from writers across disciplines. It covers four areas: World Politics, Literature, Cinema & Culture, and Books & Society.
Its motto is its promise: no party line, no paywalls, no noise. Just careful reading of the world, and saying plainly what it finds.
Mahliqa holds advanced degrees in Media & Communication and English Literature. Alongside the magazine, she founded S.C.R.I.P.T., a language-learning platform for English, Urdu, Arabic and Korean.

The mission of The Fourth Dawn
The Fourth Dawn exists to practise a kind of criticism that is patient rather than urgent, argued rather than shouted, and literary in its instincts even when its subject is the news. It believes an essay can be a small act of attention — and that attention, paid often enough and honestly enough, is its own form of hope.
What we publish
World Politics
Opinion and analysis on international politics: who holds power, how conflict unfolds, and how both are told.
Literature
Reflections, creative work and criticism on the written word: how it is made, how it is read, and what it leaves behind.
Cinema & Culture
Every frame is a choice. Reviews of international film and television that look closely at the craft, the language, the culture behind them and the messages they quietly carry — from auteur cinema to the popular. Because nothing on screen is there by accident.
Books & Society
No book is read alone. Reviews that connect books across shared themes, alongside reflections on society, art and the ideas that shape how we live.
